Uttar Pradesh is the largest state of India in terms of population. Thousands of boys and girls drop out of school education due to extreme poverty, migration and lack of resources, even after many educational reforms and progress by the government in its remote areas and villages. These are out of the mainstream of school education due to social, economic and geographical conditions.

The State Institute of Open Schooling , Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow is functioning as an autonomous institution in the year 2012 under the distance and open education system with a resolve to promote education to educationally backward rural areas and to make education accessible to all.

• To provide education through distance and open education system for students up to middle and upper secondary level with basic education.
• Education is a basic and important tool for achieving the goal of empowerment towards economic and social equality in society. To provide an opportunity to achieve this objective.
• To provide higher secondary education through self-study system to those students belonging to deprived groups and weaker sections who could not get education through formal education system.
• To provide higher secondary level education to the children of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes and Minorities from rural areas, making them self-supporting and competent.
• Strive to make women's education especially easy and accessible.
• To provide equal opportunities in the fields of politics, social, literary and science by educating women.
